Where are the Romanians?

Ever since orientation, I haven't seen a single Romanian around campus. I saw two during orientation, but I didn't consider it a big deal at the time, I thought whatever, Romanians are everywhere, I'll have a hard time not meeting them. So the weeks passed, and still no sight of them. And I found myself this weekend wondering where all the Romanians were?

Sure enough, the answer came smacking me in the face: the Romanians were on my computer, that's where they were! Sunday night I get a friendly message from the friendly University network office, informing me that I have been blocked from the wireless network because of a bot that was downloading stuff for some IRC channel. From my computer. Or something of that sort.

Whaaa? I thought I had a pretty safe system, and who the hell has nothing better to do than to look for vulnerable computers (I am aware of the fact that there is a whole branch of the computer industry that deals with this, but seriously, don't people have a life?!) As it turns out thanks to a network expert also known as dad, the problem was solved elegantly (from his side; I just freaked out), and at the end of the whole highly enjoyable Monday morning activity, he tells me:

"you wanna know some random but perhaps interesting trivia on this?"
Sure, what is it?
"guess where this person is from..."
Uhmmm... I have no clue who would have an interest in hacking my computer.
"where do all the hackers come from?"
Oh, that rings a bell. Romania? I say, somewhat incredulously.
"Curtea de Arges."

Well, there you have it. I was wondering where my countrymates were, and in their own, very special way, they found a channel to get to me. Don't they just make us proud?...

Just as a side note... did you know there is a Hacker's Code of Ethics? Who would've thought....

Did you ever think that could be a mistake? The romanian could be a victim too?

I´m a romanian too, and i´m an IT professional. But i´m not a hacker, except for those who ask... :)

So, please, don´t blame a country for 1 person...

Do you know... Was the hacker's name Manole, a world renowned "body-building" professional? :-)

ahahahahahahahhahahahahah that's an excellent one! :))))))))) I never quite thought about Manole's muscles before, but he would truly qualify as a "body-building professional" :)))))))))))))))))))))))))
